Career
In February 2005, Dean was suspended for three months due to his involvement with a horse racing betting company, in which he appeared to be violating his refereeing contract by using his football status to help promote the betting company.
Dean was originally appointed to referee the 2006 FA Cup final in Cardiff but the Football Association took the unusual step of replacing him with Alan Wiley after concerns were raised about his ability to be impartial towards Liverpool, who are based near Dean's home town on Merseyside.
Dean refereed the Championship play-off final between Leeds and Watford on the 21st May 2006.
In 2004, he officiated the International Friendly between Holland and Republic of Ireland at the Amsterdam Arena. The away side won 1 - 0 thanks to a Robbie Keane goal. No players found their way into the book.
In the same year, he officiated the FA Community Shield Final between Arsenal and Manchester United, a game which saw the London side win 3 - 1. There were three cautions.
On the 23 Septemeber, 2007, Dean officiated a match between Manchester United and Chelsea where he seemingly gave a harsh red card to John Obi Mikel, causing further speculation about his refeering abilities.
